GDI team members Executive Director Cheryl Powe, Chief Financial Officer Theresa Bailey and Treasurer Kim Davis, delivered many clothing items and shoes to Atlanta's My Sister's House, a shelter for women and children of domestic violence and/or victims of homelessness..
Here in the city of Atlanta, homelessness is becoming a serious epidemic. Some experts estimate that anywhere between 10,000 and 20,000 people become homeless each day. With only 2,600 shelter beds available in the city, several thousand homeless Atlantans have nowhere to sleep at night.
Homeless parents often find themselves in an even more undesirable situation. Not only are they unable find a safe place to sleep, but they must also watch their children suffer sleep in the streets. This situation is not uncommon as children are the fastest growing demographic among homeless people.
Further, despite the fact that many advocacy groups have worked for two decades to halt the epidemic of gender-based violence and sexual assault, the numbers are still shocking. Violence against women is the seed to so many other forms of violence. All members of the community must be engaged to end violence--from the workplace, schools, churches, locker rooms, the military and in courtrooms, law enforcement entertainment and the media.
Good Deeds will continue to do their part by working and supporting places like My Sister's House. They will also take this shelter under their wings and provide regular support of clothing and shoes for the women and children who are a part of this shelter.
We challenge our readers to also be a part of this gallant effort. If you have clothes and shoes you would like to donate, please let us know. Feel free to contact Cheryl (404-246-6352), Kim (678-281-5427) and/or Theresa (678-516-1862) and they will coordinate efforts to get these things to the shelter.
